Behind the Curtain: A Chat with the My Fair Lady Creative Team

Auditions for My Fair Lady are nearly here, and we know stepping into that audition room can feel a little daunting. So, we thought we’d give you a sneak peek into the minds of the people you’ll be auditioning for. Gathering our director, James Suckling, assistant director, Laura Hunt, and choreographer, Jennifer Pratt, for a chat about the show, they shared more about their roles and what they’re hoping to see from you. Spoiler: they’re just as excited to meet you as you are to meet them!

Starting easy, how would each of you sum up your role in just three words?

James (Director): “Creative, responsible, encouraging.”

Laura (Assistant Director): “Creative, collaborative, supportive.”

Jennifer (Choreographer): “Energetic, creative, inclusive.”

A great start - lots of creativity from the team!

What drew you to My Fair Lady?

James: “It’s an iconic musical based on a classic play, with some wonderful songs.”

Laura: “I personally loved my experience performing with LWMS in Shrek last year and wanted to take on the production side of things!”

Jennifer: “Similar to James, it's the music as well as the timeless nature of the story for me.”

It seems like we have a team that loves both the tradition and the heart of this piece, as well as a love for the society. This will bring both an incredible show for the audience and a great rehearsal experience for the cast.

When it comes to auditions—what are you looking for?

James: “I always look for a balance of talent and enthusiasm.”

Laura: “I love when someone comes in with great energy and stage presence. And never underestimate adaptability and reliability.”

Jennifer: “Someone who is always willing to put their best foot forward and give everything a try.”

So don’t panic about being perfect! Focus on showing your passion, commitment, and spark.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the show?

James: “Simple! A great night out at the theatre.”

Laura: “I want them to see the talent, joy, and dedication poured in by performers and creatives alike. Doing theatre for the love of it, not for pay.”

Jennifer: “I want the audience to feel just as much joy as the cast will have both rehearsing and performing it.”

That really shows how much this production team cares not only for the audience but the cast! Really makes you want to get your tickets already!

Just for fun—if you could play any role in My Fair Lady, who would it be?

James: “Eliza—she has to transform from Cockney flower girl to lady of society. She has great character songs to perform, too.”

Jennifer: “Same! Eliza!”

Laura: “Yup, definitely Eliza Doolittle. She’s bold, funny, and a little mischievous at times. But she's also hardworking, determined, and ultimately wins people over with her grit and heart.”

Safe to say Eliza is a popular choice… auditionees, take note!

Let’s talk specifics:

  • Directorial Vision (James): “My vision is to allow the cast to fully explore the script and music; every cast will bring a beautiful and unique interpretation. We’ll be recreating the classic, staying true to its period charm with costuming and properties, while bringing high energy and production values.”
  • Coordination (Laura): “As assistant director, my role is supporting James and his vision, keeping communication clear to help the cast and team stay consistent and confident. Attention to detail and organisation are key to this—I’ll be keeping detailed notes and acting as the bridge between cast and crew. I want to make sure I'm actively listening and motivating the cast while being approachable to all.”
  • Movement (Jennifer): “Class is a main theme in this show, and I want to express that through movement. When approaching any dance or movement, I'll start with that class and build from there. By balancing featured dancers with company movement, I can make sure the choreography works for everyone. And yes—a cheeky box step may sneak in!”

Finally, any challenges you’re gearing up for?

James: “The music requires accurate four-part harmony singing in many of the full company numbers. It’s not easy, but when it’s right, it’s stunning.”

✨ With a creative team this passionate, My Fair Lady is shaping up to be a joyful, classic, and fresh production. If you’re auditioning, remember: energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to give your best are what will truly shine in the room.

We can’t wait to meet you—see you in the audition room!
